Your Foundation is Critical - Watch the Feet!

Without balance, you will be constantly struggling to achieve consistent swing results. Watch your role model’s swing, but, and this is important, start by watching his or her feet!

Balance, Weight Transfer, and Power

For example, watch the video below showing Ryo Ishikawa’s fluid swing. Notice how his balance is comfortably on both feet when he addresses the ball. He transfers his weight slightly to the right foot on the upswing.

Start from the Bottom Up - Your Feet

Study the feet of the top 100 golfers. This will tell you a great deal about their balance, weight transfer, and power.http://japanesemartialartscenter.com/

The Weighted Foot Pushes for Power

As Ishikawa starts his downswing, you can see how he subtly pushes off with the right foot. His weight smoothly transfers to the left foot while his torso rotates, and the left foot and leg extend to create power in the second half of the swing.

Staying in Balance

A lot of duffers overdo it when shifting their weight, leading to a loss of balance, either in the upswing or in the follow through. Your body remembers the feeling and compensates by adding tension or reducing power. Watch how your role model shifts appropriately to stay in balance, transferring just the right amount of weight throughout the swing.

Visualize Yourself Making the Swing

After you have watched and analyzed your role model’s feet during the swing, visualize yourself making the same motions. The more you can relax, and the better you can see yourself moving exactly as your role model does, the better your results will be!

The Un-Weighted Foot is Free to Move

If you want a great lesson in how NOT to move, try turning your hips toward the target with your weight on both feet. It’s not easy to move the right foot (for you right-handed golfers) with the weight on it! Instead, smoothly transfer your weight to the left foot as your torso rotates, and you will easily be able to turn your right foot over.

Now it’s Time to Practice!

We recommend going to the driving range with an iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, or some other convenient device that let’s you watch video. Watch your role model’s swing, concentrate on the feet, determine why he or she does it that way, visualize yourself doing it the same way, and practice, practice, practice!

When it begins to feel natural to move your feet the way your role model moves his (or hers), go to the next page for Step Two in this revolutionary method for building your perfect golf swing!
