The Bad Points About Edelweiss

There’s a short growing season in the Wakefield area, and Edelweiss has everything it can do to grow good grass. Because of this, there are often poor grass areas on some fairways and greens. While we didn’t find these areas to cause any trouble for our shots, they do detract from the quality of the overall experience. There are many areas where the turf holds a lot of water, as well, making the walk to the ball a little dicey at times. The greenskeepers at Edelweiss could do a better job with drainage and it would make for a cleaner round of golf. One final quibble - there are abundant black flies in the area, and on days without wind, be sure to bring your bug spray!

Green fees at Edelweiss are very reasonable. On a Thursday, we paid only $80 Canadian for two golfers and cart (one of our players had a knee injury). Visit to this page to learn about one of the latest TaylorMade golf balls!

The Good Points about Edelweiss

There are several sideways fairways at Edelweiss, and lots of water hazards that make for challenging drives. Hit over the wetland on the par three third and you have an excellent chance of making a birdie. A short drive on the par five eighth hole, following by a short iron will land you right in the creek! The sixteenth fairway slopes sharply down to the right, so if you slice, your ball may roll out of bounds. If you can hit straight drives or control your hook or slice, however, The second shots on most holes at Edelweiss give you a great look at the green.

There are many undulating greens at Edelweiss, so pin placement can be critical. On many days, a good putt will get you onto the flat area near the hole, but if the greens keeper was feeling spiteful that morning, watch out! Your missed putt could roll right off the green. Our favorite challenging green is on the fifth hole, a sharp dogleg right, where there is almost no pin placement to help the weekend golfer feel better about his game.

Is Edelweiss the Perfect Golf Course?

Edelweiss is an 18-hole course located in Wakefield, Quebec, a 30-minute drive from Ottawa. Though most of the fairways are wide open, it’s a challenging par-70 course, with many undulating fairways and greens. It’s an easy course at which to get tee times because it is far away from most everything. Because it’s located in Quebec Province, marshalls and staff speak French as well as English, and when we played there in August 2010, the marshall told us that about 30% of Edelweiss golfers speak only French. Check out the view from the clubhouse, looking out over the 18th hole.
